“Talk to me” whispered my reflection.
Who am I at inception?
Am I the past, present or future?
Am I the evolution of nature?
Am I a human or a god?
Am I mystery against the odd?
Am I real or not?
Or am I fragment of thoughts?
Well, I'm just a soul with a dream.
Stitched within a medoly seam.
I am the hidden treasure of earth
Where I originated as breathe.
I am the pieces of discovery
But bare a victim of robbery
I am the imagination of lost wind
I am what tomorrow might bring
I‘m the buried arches of diamonds
I am the memories men mourn
I am what life calls a Saint
Living in a purpose I can't relent.
I am ageless and fearless.
I am colorless and flawless.
I'm neither White nor Black surface.
Yet my identity is trapped in a race
My hair traced me back to my root
My skin tell me the tales of truth
I am neither short nor tall
I'm just the rays of sun that fall
I am the symbol of the unknown
As I live and love like I had known.
I am the heartbeat of creation.
I am the puzzle behind its question.
I am what fashion calls beauty
Not for scars I feel guilty
I remain a masterpiece till infinity
Crafting out the counsel of Divinity
I am Irreplaceable
I am Unbreakable
Oh! I am destined for greatness
why cast shadows on my weakness?
I am a gender they see less.
Since my emotion is resilience
I hate when my tears stain my dress
Making me a mistress in distress
I've caged my own body like prisons
To shape shift for society reasons
I mirror myself in critic of humanity
Where lives are filtered in reality
Yet, I'm the missing link of this illusion
Where broken legs chase perfection.
I am a autumn, winter, and spring
Which of these seasons shall I bring?
I am a remedy to scornful heart
Living in the mind of wild cast
Heart beating for miracles written
Mind spinning for the way of healing
So goodbye was all a lie
The enemy I see eye to eye
Alas! Forgive my unbelief
Cos I'm still nursing my relief.
I am what faith chose what I be
As time close its bars against me
I cast my Kindred dust to dust
Oozing my pain from what was lost
Come, I am the well of wisdom
I've drown my Imposter syndrome
In my purity, I shed my innocence
And whittled as sound of resonance
I've bruise the wound of expectation
For I am a believer with redemption.
I am a kiss that blooms and thrive.
As i shade the colors of life
When I flew across the cold bridges
I kneeled at it’s wishes
I've watered my ode a times
Cos even Angels cry sometimes
What happen next when I’m gone?
What’s says the moon at Dawn?
Till then, Remember to sing my praise
For I’ll be back in a thousand years.
I am the hero of my story.
I am its crown of glory.
I am the living word in a world.
I am the hidden ink behind this walls.
I am the priceless art of talent.
I am a sound of joy that resonate.
I am repeating the writings of old.
I am the reckoning voice to behold.
I am what God says I am.
I am the rhythm of this rhyme.
Background and Theme.
A written by Okoro Amarachi Anastasia, a poet and writer. She has composed several poem and it is one of her outstanding poem ever. It is a long poem of nine stanza with ninety lines, each stanza has it own meaning and point. A lot of questions and rhetorical questions were used in the poem. The theme centered on the title “Confession of Identity” which asks the question ‘Who am I?, in response to that, she poured out her heart to her readers, hoping they can also connect to her emotion and deepest thoughts. Along the line, she stated various traits, character, with each stanza giving meaning to the identity of the poet. It is written with the intent to answer human questions and stir the curiosity of readers to understand themselves by reflecting on their lives. Seeing the honest conversation between the poet and herself, I believe anyone who reads it will fit into the imagination she creates.
Analysis:
At the beginning, the first line of the poem shows this willingness to have a conversation (the poet and herself). She puts out a scenario of two persons in a therapy session, the one (which she calls her reflection, that is an imaginative character) says to her “talk to me”. This brings in a moment of openness, acceptance and truth. The stanza poses a picture of one's discovery which is seen through questioning. Here, the poet is seen reflecting on her life, starting her second line with the question “who am I at inception”. This intiatied the reason for her existence and the purpose of living.
Stanza two is where the poet affirms her originality. Her very own existence. Her discovery and purpose trapped in her nature. Seeing her presence as something precious to earth. Here, she attaches a sense of significance to her being, self worth and value.
Stanze three kicks off with another meaning which is seen from the lens of race, blacks. She tries to defend her identity against the popular notion or tag given to the people of her color. To the poet, don't place her being on color but on humanity and love (line 32 and 33). Looking at Stanza four, the poet's thought on self esteem and beauty (both inner beauty and outside). In this stanza, she praises herself, her strength, uniqueness, self adoration and worth. She also question why humans see her as weak.
Stanza Five foresees the struggle of her gender in a complex society. One of the silent battles she faces in life, is how people see her less at times, based her gender. Also, the emotional challenge aspect of being a woman is what society as a whole considers as being weak and unreasonable, now, inorder to adjust to that, she buries hers (see line 53). She also talks about the effects of societal rules, culture and justification (line 56). Also, she says something that is quite fascinating, on societal criticism which brings about a strife for perfection that is not possible, causing overwhelming stress and pressure to prove one’s self, especially in a deceptive circle. The next stanza which is stanza six connotes different personalities she possess which she calls autumn, winter, and spring, yet they all serve their purposes. She mentions how beneficial and useful she has been to humanity. Healing the broken hearted and taking care of people wounds. The miracles and healing she has witnessed in her journey of life.
Stanza Seven addresses the struggles seen in life, challenges, disappointment, lost of beloved ones, how to perceive it, handle it and overcome it. She acknowledges her faith amidst those troubling times in her life. Stanza eight emphasizes on the need to be remembered and leave her footprint on the sands of time regardless of what life brings on the table. The need to fulfill destiny, wishes and dreams. The pursuit of satisfaction in fulfilling one’s passion in life which brings about joy. Finally, the last part of the poem which is stanza nine closed the chapter with declaration of what and who she truly believes she is and will be. Not what people says or what society says or circumstances says but what God (her source) says or calls her to.
Poetic Devices Applied:
1• Anaphoric: The repetition of a phrase at the beginning of verses used for emphasis. In the first stanza, the poet’s significant phrase “am I” and “ I am” was repeated severally in the poem. The words “am I” was repeated in stanza one seven times while the phrase “I am” was repeated thirty times in the poem.
2• Personification: it is seen in the first line stanza where the word ‘reflection’ in line is given human quality.
3• Alliteration: The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of two or more words at short intervals. This is seen in line 4 of stanza 5 ‘Mistress in Distress’
4• Hyperbole: Deliberate overstatement. This is explored in the last line of stanza five ‘broken legs chasing perfection’.
5• Metaphor: it is mainly seen in lines where the poet used the word “I am”. Example in 61 stanza six where she said “I am autumn, winter and spring” which compare her personalities with that of those seasons.
