Fear has been their nightmare,
Beer has been their share
Of drowning, they are not aware.
They ask for space and fresh air.
They hopefully wish for a mere,
Cash of an unknown Billionaire,
Big brands they want to wear,
Wise words from Christ they don't hear.
Hand in hand like a pair,
They hold their heads in despair.
Young people are in need of proper care.
Moral teenagers they were,
Now they are progressing nowhere.
Hunter got hunted by a bear.
They need to step away from a snare,
Otherwise they might think life is unfair.
They need to realize having an affair,
with Mighty God is truly fair.
A powerful poem written by Young Church Poetry, Lesotho, Maseru. The poem tone is instructive and the diction is simply and narrative. This is poem that depict the contemporary youth we have today.
This is a poem of eighteen lines with one stanza that has a one rhymes scheme of “aa”. This poem was written with intent to create a remarkable impact in the lives of the youth. This is a poem that gave an advise that all youths should heed. It stated the truth every youth has to accept and embrace. The poem pictured and pointed out the life of the youth (their lifestyle, behavior, habit, choices, wants, etc), giving a constructive criticism and wisdom regarding to it.
Looking at the first line of the poem, it simply stated the fact, which says “Fear has been their nightmare”, fear of uncertainty and of unknown. It’s denote a stage where they are surrounded with fear, anxiety and pressure of life.
From line two down, explain the life they choose to live which seem to reckless, materialistic, brutal, quick to get rich at all cost (see line six and seven “Cash of an unknown Billionaire, Big brands they want to wear” ). The thought and feeling that they have grown and they have right to do whatever they want. They believed that they should be given a space to live their life the way they want which is not actually good for them. They don’t want to seek guidance from anyone. They want to ride their own course alone.
Also, the poet bring to light how young people need proper care, help and should be guided (see eleven “Young people are in need of proper care”) else they will go astray. The poet has already stated how young despise and neglect the message of Christ which will bring light in their lives ( see line eight “Wise words from Christ they don't hear”).
On that aspect, the poet made know on how they were morally sound youth were in their teenage hood were before they started progressing to no where which is snare or trap that will lead them into doom, which will give them the impression that life is unfair. In the conclusion, the poet advise youth to draw close to God (to be God conscious) as the only way to live right. The poet provide a religious solution/ responds as what youths should embrace to live a better life. Being in a relationship with their source of life is life changing and the best goal in life (see the last line, They need to realize having an affair with Mighty God is truly fair.)
In the poem, the poet employed few figure of speech, such as personification in line fourteen “Hunter got hunted by a bear”. The use of paradox In line thirteen “Now they are progressing nowhere”. The use of alliteration in line nine “Hand in hand like a Pair”
