This journey
a crossing of many paths
some straight-narrow
others
wide and winding
with warning signs along
the way
a red light - stop
flashing yellow - caution
stalling the traffic
road signs a hindrance
sharp curves ahead
traveling onward
maturing
lessons learned
knowledge obtained
this journey
is a crossing of many paths
until the final light
turns green.
Analysis/ Review of the poem.
A classical poem penned down by Heather Burns to remind us the journey of life we find ourselves in. Not equal nor fair to all, filed with up and down, challenging, moment to wait, lesson to learn and victory to claim. This is a simple narrative poem written in seven stanza in a black verse, with the use of enjambment. The title of the poem gave a hint of the poem. The poet tone is mild and his language is constructive and understandable.
Looking at the theme of the poem, the poet started with apprehending the fact the life is filled with many paths (thing), which make it complex and dynamic. Some days or some phase of our lives can be smooth & easy while some days can be difficult, tough and problematic. In the third stanza, I love how the poet intentional use the traffic light, that is Red, Yellow and Green to describe the journey of life, elaborating his point with meaning of the each light. In our lives, the moment we need to take a break and I believe that this part passes a message to the young folks who are feel they are not making progress in life or to those who are in hurry to make it. Rest or waiting is part of the journey of life. Don't feel stuck or frustrated. Don't feel like you are in a stagnation. Every oath we take in life has something to teach us especially to this generation who still have so much ahead of theme. It is okay to stop and take a break.
Another sign is the yellow light which means time to take caution. Being vagilant and careful in every steps and decision we make in life, so not to end up in regrets. Even though, we make mistakes in paths, we should learn our lessons and continue the journey of life. Even if we encounter hinderance, we should always be courageous to keep pushing.
Lastly, poet conclude the poem with a sign of relief, which inform its audience that at the end of everything, we will get to see the green light, which signifies go, progress, giving a feeling of joy, satisfaction, celebration, happiness and progress to count. To the youths, what matters is to keep going and the determination to continue despite the rocky paths and dark of life, for there is light at the end of the tunnel.
