Who cares and washed thy infant head?
“The guardian angel I first met” it says
As they lock each other eyes in twilight
Their bond became more solid than granite
As I saw its tiny fingers grasping her bossom
Sucking still into mama’s love with joy.
I can tell how his world collapse into hers
For she understood his deepest abssy
Their connection was never unbroken at birth
As both once inhaled and exhaled each other breath.
Mama reads it cry, silence, signs and gaze
Mama writes it smile, giggling, and happiness.
Her care; a language that translates it unsaid words
Until it began to know life in her shadows.
As it grow old, will their love touch grow cold?
Never! mama’s heart will always keep it warm.
Seeing this orchid spread the fragrance of love
Then, I knew what life was meant to be.
This is a poem of eighteen lines with two stanza written by Okoro Amarachi Anastasia. She is a poet and a writer. The “mama’s succor” explain the theme of the poem. The message of the poet simply behold the love and bond that exist between a mother and her child. The inspiration was driven from her experience when she was staring a nursing mother breastfeeding her new born baby. Several questions and thoughts run through the poets mind, which penned down as a poem. According to poet, the love was overwhelmingly and all encompassing. This scene took her back to her own life, imagining how she will face such phase of life. To her, the mother is a perfect representation of a caring and loving mother who is so selfless to consider the need of her child and look after it. She also talked about how the child look so helpless without the mom yet she stood as an Angel ( his protector), and she understands everything the child was struggling to communicate. The connection was deep that she know when the baby needs food, is in pain and wants to sleep. Sometimes, it is astonishing to watch how they both understand each other without saying a word. It is the thing of the heart. The dependence of a new birth baby on the mother teaches something significant about life. We need each other to survive.
Looking at the analysis of the poem.
The poet use the word “it” for the new born born because she didn’t want to be gender specific. She generalized it. She emphasized on the affection shown by the woman to her new born baby despite the feeling of exhaustion, tiredness, sleepless night and frustration from childbirth.
This poem is eulogy that praise every mother out there that sincerely poured out their love and strength to raise their children/child. The responsibility is immeasurable and should be acknowledged.
The poem has figurative devices such Simile (see in line 4). Personification (line 11 & 12), alliteration (line 6), Enjambement, irony (line 15).
