‘Tis a lesson you should heed,
If at first you don't succeed,
Try, try again;
Then your courage should appear,
For if you will persevere,
You will conquer, never fear
Try, try again;
Once or twice, though you should fall,
If you would at last prevail,
Try, try again;
If we strive, ‘his no disgrace
Though we do not win the race;
What should you do in the case?
Try, try again
If you find your task hard,
Time will bring you your reward,
Try, try again
All that other folks can do,
Why, with patience, should not you?
Only keep this rule in view:
Try, try again.
Analysis and Review of the poem by Okoro Amarachi Anastasia.
A Constructive and impactful poem written by T. H. Palmer targeted to the youth as its audience. The poem share priceless wisdom pursuit of life and success. Just like the title of the poem “try, try again, form the piece of advise the poet/speaker render to its audience, including the mindset that they should not give up in life no matter what happens in life. The tone of the speaker is strong, and empowering its audience to take an action. The poem is written in six stanza with no regular rhyme scheme but it has rhythms. The language is simple and direct with no or little iambic pentameter.
In my explanatory view of the poem, the stanza started with a direct instruction on what we should do when we don’t succeed, we should try again. The voice continue to speak that we should be courageous to be preserved and be brave to conquer all. The third stanza continued to encourage us to stand regardless how many time we fail in life. It is our responsibility to stand up after our fall and we can only stand when we should to try again.
Stanza four, indicate another interesting point as the speaker that say that there is no disgrace in our strive to achieve our goals and dream in life. We should not be ashamed it we do not win. There is still opportunity for us to win and we can only utilize that opportunity when we try again. The fifth stanza is encouraging and comforting, by telling it's audience that with time that they will receive the rewards of their patience, consistency and hard work.
Finally, the last stanza of the poem ended the poem with an short be piece of advice that we should have patience in life as we look at other we exercise patience. We should learn to do the same and that should be a rule that she should bear in mind alway. Personally, this poem did a justice in speaking to the youth as suppose.
A notable figurative/ poetic device used in the poem is repetition. Repetition of the phrase “Try, try again” at the end of each stanza. Another poetic used in the poem is personification “Time will bring you your reward”.
