I was drunk into your melody string,
As I cast my winter coat on summer spring.
Here and there, I'll cast your sweet secret,
On the day you woo me into it.
With my dying breath, I buried your fears.
With my silent words, i saved your tears.
Staring at my heroes in your eyes,
I kissed the night you once deny.
In your very quest to die or ride,
Don't make me your sad bride.
For they said, “lovers never die”,
Yet your heart makes me laugh and cry.
This may be the last letters of our bodies,
Which will wash away our old burdens.
I won’t write a sad poem again,
Cos I'm the sweet lover you regain.
I love you beyond the wounds I bear.
I love you both in truth and dare.
Analysis
A poem written by Okoro Amara Anastasia, a writer and a poet. This is a poem of 18 lines, one stanza. It is a love poem written by her. It has rhymes and rhythms. The theme on her love centered on love and the memories and forgiveness that comes with it. The heartbreak that comes with it and the forgiveness and decisions to stay and love the person despite whatever that comes. They always say love stands the rest of time. The poet choose to pass across this message to her reader the enduring and forgiveness aspect of love. Also love is seen in action, deeds and not in words. In the last line, she made it clear “I love you both in truth and dare”. This is moral lesson, people should learn from her poem, love comes with patience, enduring and sacrifices, etc and acceptance of one flaws, and mistakes. Another intriguing point made by the poet that is how we can experience pain and happiness at the same time from people who loves you and care about you (see line 12).
The sole point of the poem is that Love win alls because it is selfless, that is, putting others before you. The poet always admit self love in her poem in line 10, she said “don’t make me your sad bride”, which connote the notion of self love and value. In line, she said “I won’t write sad poem again”, the decision to choose be happy regardless of what happens. Love is a powerful force.
Poetic device:
The poet adopted a lot of figurative devices. Line 5 (With my dying breath, I buried your fears) and line 6
(With my silent words, i saved your tears) is metaphorical. She applied personification in line 13 where she said “this may be the last letters of our bodies” , also in line 8 she stated “I kissed the night you once deny”. Giving it a human attribute. She made use of enjambment in her poem (it is seen in 1 and 2, line 3 and 4, line 15 and 16, etc).
