Is it odd?
That we see only our outsides,
But everything happens on the inside.
Even the dead feels the weight of the world.
So, please don’t judge my Innocence,
For I am naive to my deeds.
Please pardon my silly excuses,
For I’ve wrong all my right ways.
Yet, wisdom has been chasing me,
But I’ve always been faster.
oh! teach me how to count my blessings,
For I afraid of getting older.
Wake me up to burn my night candle,
Cos I have old memories that tangled.
Take me to river to see my reflection,
Cos all I know is how to live.
Save me from my lovely mistakes,
When I accidentally taste the test.
I pled to hold me tightly to the truth,
For I am just a youth.
Review:
A poem written by Okoro Amarachi Anastasia. Pen name : I.C Amar.
This is a narrative poem of 20 lines, written to solicit on behalf of the youth. Looking closely to the theme of the poem, the poet simply point the need to take it easy with life and as well do what is expected of us to do. The poet try to adjust to the pressure of life on the shoulders of youths, bringing in the room to make mistakes, learn form their mistakes, the need to guide and correct them, and as well tolerate them.
It is true that life can be complex and difficult at times, especially to this generation, however, the poet affirm there is need to be productive in life and make peace with our discomfort. This open every youth up to the reality of being disciplined, focus and determine. That’s why the poet put out her point in line 13, 17 and 19, where she confronted herself (also to every youth) to see the need to wake up from their slumber and face the truth. In as much, at the beginning of the poem, the poet begged for space and relief from the stress of life on every youth life, she also admitted the need to take life serous.
In her poem, it pointed out the foolishness, mistake, excuses, and stupidity of youths and the fears of getting older hold them accountable of her action while they are still young. All these thoughts, she highlighted.
She concluded her poem with a sense of humility to learn and be guided well in this journey of life. This moral lesson should inculcate in youth, a self awareness to submit to people who have been in the journey of life ahead of them. Instead of being stubborn and foolish, they should learn to seek advise and wisdom from their elders. They should also aim that making the world better for themselves, even it not so. They should save their future, now they are in present. They should take it easy as well and reflect on themselves.
Poetic Devices: Hyperbole: It simply means an extravagant exaggeration. The poet used hyperbole in line 4 which says “Even the dead feels the weight of the world”, typifying the heavy responsibility, hardship of life posed to every human in the world. Another figure of speech is Personification which is seen in line where the poet quoted “Yes, wisdom has been chasing me…” Attributing a human characteristic to abstract words or inanimate object.
