“Please be Gentle with me”
whispered the little child in me. For what you see here
is all that refused to finish breaking,
…So when I go to bed at night, and I turn my light off,
“I KNOW I DID MY BEST”. For my peace clothes the last piece of me and my blanket that covers my rough sea.
Leaving my thoughts to bleed on my pillow.
Analysis, Theme, Poetic Devices, language and Tone.
“A Letter” is a short poem composed by Okoro Amarachi Anastasia. A writer and a poet. It’s a poem of 10lines. The theme of poem depicts a cry of consolation and an act of pity which comes from exhaustion. This is a poem inspired and drawn from the poet’s experience. Looking at the first & second line, it says “Be Gentle with me” whispered the little child in me. This is a statement made by the poet to herself which typifies how harsh and hard she has been on herself. It’s pictured a state of self awareness of how she had stressed herself beyond her strength and how she forgot to take care of herself too, which shows of self negligence and denials of self love. So she mirrored herself into another person to confront her own action. Her outcry shows the need to embrace self love, prioritize herself and reduce any pressure she place herself into.
Looking at the third and fourth lines, she made a complaint, of why she ended up broken, bruised and stressed. This is a conversation between the poet and herself to resolve the internal conflict she battled within herself. She has gone circumstances and situations that shaped her the way she is. She pleads for self acceptance, especially in a state when she is vulnerable, tired and weak. From context, we can observe that life has hit her badly and she is at her lower point. Her point is that instead of blaming herself (for not getting her work done, or not being enough good or why will she act weak in front of everyone) rather she should embrace herself gently and tap on her on the shoulders and acknowledge herself. Why? The remaining lines point out the reasons. She said she did her best. Therefore, she has peace of mind that she did all she could, even if she didn’t make the progress as she determined to do. What comfort her is the fact she was sincere, accountable and honest with herself. It’s sad that sometimes, she forgot that she is also a human and in life things doesn’t go the way she planned it.
In conclusion, despite how worried she might be regarding to how she has failed and how her expectations was cut short, she made peace with herself.
