Hold fast to dreams,
For if dreams die,
Life is a broken-winged bird,
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams,
For when dreams go,
Life is a barren field,
Frozen with snow.
Analysis/ Reviews of the poem.
Let look into the analysis of the poem.
This a simple short poem written by Langston Hughes on dream which resonates in lives of youth. Every young folks has a dream and life expectations to meet up to. Every promising young stars has goals, Vision and passion to fulfill. The poet made it clear to young people, the essence and significance these dream represent in our lives. That’s why the beginning of this poem started with the line “Hold fast to dreams”, which give a sense of value and importance to our dream which form our purpose in lives. The poet sounded like he was giving an instruction to his audience.
Also the line 2,3 and 4, stated reasons that backed up the first line of the poem. It says “For if dreams die, Life is a broken-winged bird , That cannot fly.” The poet stated clear the consequences of youth refuse to head to his advise in the first line. The simple interpretation of what he poet said in line 2,3 &4 is that life is meaningless and useless if one dream die. It is like a empty life with no breathe. In other words, it is not worth living because one’s essence and purpose is stripped off when their dreams died. Therefore the message/ theme of this poem centers on keeping your dream alive no what we face in this journey of life.
This is quite intriguing that poet repeated the thoughts in a similar, but yet in a different way. Line 5 mentioned “Hold fast to dreams” as an advise that should be heed to and uphold. Don’t sacrifice your dream for anything. Don’t let go of dream because life is hard, Don’t forget you have a dream. These streams of lines give young people a sense of responsibility and purpose to become who they dreamt to me. We have a dream that we dreamt.
Finally the poet also, warned her audience of what will be their becoming or ending of they don’t head to the second instruction. They should hold what they called their instruction or live in regret, anger, emptiness, worthlessness, and broken. Young people should learn to pursue their and they should give up. Looking at the poetic devices used in the poem, the poet adopted metaphor in line three and seven and it says “Life is a broken-winged bird” & “Life is a barren field” the word “is” show a comparison between life and the rest of phrase that ended the poem.
